Is it cheaper to buy flowers from a florist?  The short answer is no.  Grocery stores and big box retailers purchase their flowers in bulk.  Their buying power allows them to drive the price down.  Flowers are often a loss leader for grocery stores.  That means that they take a loss on flowers to drive you into the store by advertising cheap prices. Collinsdictionary.com states A florist is a shopkeeper who arranges and sells flowers and sells house plants.  This paints a very small picture and does not really capture the artistry of being a florist.  Many modern florists also do not sell house plants. A florist is not merely someone who sells flowers and plants as the Merriam-Webster dictionary states.  A florist is a flower designer, even a floral artist.  A florist purchases flowers from floral wholesalers and local growers and then designs and creates floral arrangements.  Independent florists create their own unique designs while florists in a network like FTD or Teleflora copy designs that the network approves.
